Rather than by record sales figures, the Beastie Boys’ groundbreaking career should be measured on the Richter scale. From one seismic event to the next since the late 1970s, they managed to open a massive fault line through which hardcore punk, hip-hop, funk, psychedelic rock and dub snuck in, particularly following their official debut in 1986 with Licensed to Ill. The Brooklyn trio generated so many seismic shifts that the final aftershock had a fatal effect on the band itself: the death of Adam Yauch in May 2012 took with it a third of the Beastie Boys’ history.
But that story has continued to be told in recent years through the official biography published by the band’s other two founding members in 2018 (Beastie Boys Book) and its subsequent film adaptation in a documentary directed by Spike Jonze and released a couple of years later (Beastie Boys Story). A legacy that now falls into the hands of Mike D, who is launching his solo career with Switch Up, a crazy break-hop single.
The legacy of the Beastie Boys and Mike D’s new venture will come together on 16th June at La (2) de Apolo in Barcelona in a concert co-organised by Primavera Tours and Caprichos de Apolo.
