It’s easy to fall for Bilal Sayeed Oliver. His music exudes an overwhelming personality, a contagious energy for blending genres into one, and an experimental drive that never shies away from accessibility. His talent borders on genius, forged in the legendary Soulquarians collective — a cradle of great musicians in the late ’90s. Born in Philadelphia 45 years ago, Bilal’s résumé is already breathtaking for his collaborations alone: Kendrick Lamar, Common, Erykah Badu, Solange Knowles, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Guru, Kimbra, J Dilla, Robert Glasper, and The Roots have all worked with him. But it’s his albums of cosmic soul and otherworldly jazz that have truly built his legacy — from 1st Born Second (2001) to Adjust Brightness (2024). A torrent of creativity in which genre boundaries dissolve in pursuit of a profound and indefinable beauty.
