Nate Smith is one of the leading drummers on the contemporary jazz scene. Rooted in the purest jazz tradition, his music also draws on funk, soul and psychedelia, underpinned by a prodigious technique. He makes his debut at our festival as a bandleader in the very year he also takes up the role of artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival, the festival we all look up to. “Nate Smith is a leader who is sure to leave his mark on the future of jazz,” said George Wein, founder of Newport, in 2019.
