Stereolab were not necessarily the first metal-linguistic group, but they have become a paradigm of an encyclopaedic band, steeped in musical erudition.
In the three decades since the release of their debut, "Peng!", Stereolab have gone from commenting on the sonic legacy of the 20th century to writing their own history, compiled in the "Switched On" series.
The fifth volume, "Pulse of the Early Brain", will appear on 2 September, a release that will allow the band to revisit both their hits and hidden gems on their spanish autumn tour.
The songs of Tim Gane, Laetitia Sadier and company sound like commentaries on a critical edition of psychedelia, kraut rock or lounge.
It is enough to listen to them with a little attention to realise that, deep down, they are talking to us about the issues - light or transcendent - that surround human beings. Just like all the great pop artists of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
