Festival Mil·lenni: Gabriel Garzón-Montano

Concert of Gabriel Garzón-Montano in Barcelona - 08th January, 2022

Gabriel Garzón-Montano was raised in New York's neighbourhood of Brooklyn by parents of Franco-Colombian descent. His mother, a musician, and member of Philip Glass ensamble, encouraged him to pick up an instrument at the age of six. His favourite was the violin, which he studied until he was thirteen, when he included drums, guitar, and keyboards among others.

After studying performing arts at the prestigious Laguardia High School (an institution that has had students such as the jazz drummers Omar Hakim and Billy Cobham), Gabriel spent his formative years absorbing influences as broad as Jeff Buckley and James Brown, until he succeeded in creating his own sound. All that training, as well as having been educated among the great variety of street music in New York, until making up the essence in "Jardin", his first LP, in January 2017.

His tone is delightfully dense and minimalist, delving into a melting pot of soul, jazz, cumbia, hip hop, and P-funk, while also makes social commentaries and recounts imaginary and personal landscapes.

On October 2, 2020, he released his second album, “Agüita”, which contains ten songs and is his first work on the Jagjwugar label (where Bon Iver, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten and Dinosaur Jr., among others, also publish).
